For Valentine’s Day, we returned to the scene of Dean Danos’ PhD days at the University of Texas for afternoon meetings at Dell Computer, hosted by David Nelson T’98. We met 4 alumni there, and toured their Command Center, which has a map of the world and shows any site of trouble with Dell products. Luckily, there were not many red lights flashing that day!

It was a busy week down south!
To The Tuck Community:
I returned a few days ago from a week in Tokyo, where we held an alumni event on a cold evening that felt more like Hanover than Tokyo (indeed, there was as much snow and ice on the streets of Tokyo as you had back here in the Upper Valley).
Following our protocol for building the Tuck brand and reputation, we balanced our efforts across six areas:
• Admissions – candidate interviews and outreach to prospective students
• Alumni – outreach to key alumni and alumni receptions
• MBA hiring – meetings with corporate recruiters
• Executive education – meetings with prospective corporate clients
• University partnerships – meetings with other Deans
• Press/public relations – interviews with top business media outlets
In addition to the alumni reception, Clark Callahan and I visited our good friends the Uehara’s at Taisho pharmaceuticals, along with meetings with senior executives at Mitsui & Co., Mitsubishi UFJ Bank, Mizuho, Itochu, Komatsu, and Sony, Sumitomo, and Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation. We also met with colleagues from Keio (our partner in the new Council on Business and Society, along with Essec, Mannheim, and Fudan), and Hitotsubashi University. And we spent time with reporters from Nikkei and NHK (Japan national television), so there is both print and national broadcast press on Tuck in Japan this week.
Our growing relationship with Mitsui is a good example of the kind of multi-faceted relationship we are able to build with major Japanese corporations. We have a special student hosted by Mitsui in each first year class, the company has sponsored a case study which was used in the core this year (with a guest lecture by Chairman Utsuda), and they intend to host a Learning Expedition in Japan in the year ahead. In addition, we have a large handful of executive education participants each year from across Mitsui’s businesses. Mitsui is also endowing a Dartmouth Chair in the Study of Japan.
Pulling together an itinerary for a week in-country is a complex undertaking, and our long-time representative in Japan Motohito (Ken) Kamei did his usual crisp and productive work to assure we used every minute well.
We all know that 2011 was an incredibly challenging year for our alumni, friends and colleagues in Japan, so it was especially nice to see so many of them last week. Japan represents a longstanding and special set of relationships for Tuck and Dartmouth, and we can look forward to continuing and growing those well into the future as Asia continues to rise in the global economy.
All the best,
-Paul

The Atlanta Club, organized by Scott Russell T’92, has held three other such virtual discussions with Tuck faculty members Bob Hansen, Syd Finkelstein, and Kevin Keller. The technology is getting easier to use and has improved dramatically both in visual and audio quality in recent times.

We hope that other clubs will begin to incorporate this effective and useful technology as well.

Hello everyone!
I am returning to Hanover from a trip to Brazil and Argentina. I am pleased to report that we continue to make strong progress in building the Tuck brand in Latin America.
Kristine Laca (Tuck’s Latin American representative who lives in the region), Sharon Tulley (from Tuck’s PR office), and I spent four busy days in Buenos Aires and São Paulo. We met with alumni, prospective students, MBA advisors, business school deans, and the press. Here are some highlights from the trip:
In Argentina we met with several reporters from El Cronista, Clarín, and iProfesional. In the evening, Tuck hosted an Admissions Information Session with over 20 prospective students and later a wonderful dinner with our alumni.
In Brazil, Tuck and IE Business School (Spain) co-hosted an informative roundtable discussion with deans of well-known Brazilian business schools. The exchange was designed to share trends and to promote greater cooperation and exchange of ideas among schools. Joining us were business schools from all parts of Brazil: FGV-EAESP, INSPER, FGV-EBAPE, IBMEC-RJ, COPPEAD-UFRG, and Fundação Dom Cabral (FDC).
Additionally, I met with several Brazilian press including reporters from Exame, Voce SA, Valor Econômico, Folha de São Paulo, Istoé Dinheiro and Revista Capital Aberto. In the evening we hosted another Tuck Admissions Information Session with over 30 attendees and an alumni cocktail party. Finally, IE Business School and Tuck co-hosted a second alumni event with an informative panel discussion about “Sustainability and its importance in the world of business.”.
